What Is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written as: numerator/denominator

Types of Fractions

  • Proper fraction: numerator < denominator (e.g. 3/4)
  • Improper fraction: numerator > denominator (e.g. 7/3)
  • Mixed number: whole number + proper fraction (e.g. 2½)
  • Equivalent fractions: same value, different form (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6)

Adding Fractions (Same Denominator)

1/5 + 2/5 = 3/5 — just add the numerators.

Adding Fractions (Different Denominators)

1/3 + 1/4: Find LCM of 3 and 4 = 12
= 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12

Multiplying Fractions

2/3 × 3/5 = (2×3)/(3×5) = 6/15 = 2/5

Dividing Fractions

2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6 (multiply by the reciprocal)
