Percentages

A percentage means "out of 100". The symbol is %.

Converting Fractions to Percentages

Multiply the fraction by 100:
3/4 × 100 = 75%
1/5 × 100 = 20%

Finding a Percentage of a Quantity

What is 30% of 200?
30/100 × 200 = 60

Percentage Increase and Decrease

Percentage increase = (Increase ÷ Original) × 100
A price rises from ₦500 to ₦600. Increase = 100. % increase = 100/500 × 100 = 20%

Ratio

A ratio compares two or more quantities. A:B = A to B.
Share ₦720 in ratio 3:5:
Total parts = 8. Each part = 720 ÷ 8 = 90.
First share = 3 × 90 = ₦270. Second = 5 × 90 = ₦450.

💡 In Nigeria, ratios are used in sharing profits, mixing concrete, and splitting inheritance.
