Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food using sunlight.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
(Carbon dioxide + Water + Light → Glucose + Oxygen)
Conditions for Photosynthesis
- Sunlight (energy source)
- Carbon dioxide (from air through stomata)
- Water (absorbed by roots)
- Chlorophyll (green pigment in leaves)
Respiration
Respiration is the process by which cells release energy from food (glucose).
Aerobic Respiration (with oxygen)
C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Energy (ATP)
Anaerobic Respiration (without oxygen)
In yeast: Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon dioxide + Energy
In muscles: Glucose → Lactic acid + Energy
Differences
| Feature | Photosynthesis | Respiration |
|---|---|---|
| Occurs in | Green plants only | All living organisms |
| Requires | Light | Glucose |
| Produces | Glucose + O₂ | CO₂ + H₂O + Energy |
| Time | During daylight | Day and night |
