What Is a Cell?

The cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of all living things. Just as a house is made of bricks, living organisms are made of cells.

Parts of a Cell and Their Functions

  • Nucleus: Controls all cell activities (the "brain")
  • Cell membrane: Controls what enters and leaves the cell
  • Cytoplasm: Jelly-like fluid holding organelles in place
  • Mitochondria: Produces energy (powerhouse of the cell)
  • Ribosome: Makes proteins
  • Chloroplast: (Plant only) — captures sunlight for photosynthesis
  • Vacuole: Stores water, food, and waste
💡 All living things are made of cells. Some organisms (like bacteria) have just one cell — they are called unicellular. Humans have trillions of cells — we are multicellular.

Question 1 of 5
What is the powerhouse of the cell?
The mitochondria produces energy (ATP) for the cell, earning it the nickname "powerhouse of the cell."
Question 2 of 5
Which organelle is found in plant cells but NOT in animal cells?
Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells. They contain chlorophyll and carry out photosynthesis.
Question 3 of 5
What does the nucleus do?
The nucleus contains DNA and controls all the activities of the cell.
Question 4 of 5
A single-celled organism is called?
Unicellular means having only one cell, like amoeba or bacteria.
Question 5 of 5
Which part of the cell controls what enters and leaves?
The cell membrane is selectively permeable — it controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
