Addition

Addition means combining two or more numbers to get a total called the sum.

Example: 4,563 + 2,178

Always start from the right (units column). Carry over when a column exceeds 9.

Subtraction

Subtraction means finding the difference between two numbers.

Example: 7,852 − 3,419

When the top digit is smaller than the bottom, borrow from the next column.

Word Problem

A school has 2,450 students. 875 are absent today. How many are present?
Solution: 2,450 − 875 = 1,575 students are present.
