What Is Soil?
Soil is the top layer of the earth's surface in which plants grow. It is a mixture of minerals, organic matter (humus), water, air, and living organisms.
Types of Soil
| Soil Type | Particle Size | Properties | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandy soil | Largest | Gritty, drains quickly, low nutrients | Yam, groundnut |
| Clay soil | Smallest | Sticky, holds water, rich in nutrients | Rice, sugarcane |
| Loamy soil | Medium | Ideal mix of sand, silt and clay | Most crops (best soil) |
| Silt soil | Medium-fine | Smooth, retains moisture well | Vegetables |
Importance of Soil
- Provides anchorage for plant roots
- Supplies nutrients and water to plants
- Habitat for microorganisms (bacteria, fungi) that decompose organic matter
- Filters and purifies water
- Foundation for buildings and roads
Soil Erosion
Soil erosion is the removal of the top layer of soil by water, wind, or human activities. Prevention methods include:
- Planting cover crops and trees
- Contour farming and terracing
- Mulching
- Strip cropping
